Be cheap as chips!

Little low on the Benjamins? Have you forgotten what food other than Mi-Goreng tastes like? Rent due tomorrow? The budget of a student can be harsh. Although Verge can’t lend you a tenner, we can offer you a whole lot of fun and wonder at a price you are willing to pay. Nothing.

1. Uncontainable

UnContainable is the largest art exhibition the university has ever seen, ten shipping containers open from every morning of every Verge day and locked up tight at night. Check them out, explore the works of artists and, in our special Festival Container, read up on your new favourite collective or artist. You won’t be able to avoid it, so why bother trying?

2. Funch

Come up to Eastern Avenue from 12-2 pm every day to find out what Verge has in store for you. It could be ponies, tarp surfing, a cook-up with a celebrity chef or a science demonstration that’ll blow your mind (as long as you’re not a physicist, smarty-labcoat-pants), what we can guarantee is that it’ll be excellent. Completely free!

3. Palm Awards

The USU’s Photography, Art, Literature and Music Awards are open to all students and free to boot. Come see the finalists in the welcoming confines of the Verge Gallery, grab yourself a sandwich and a carrot stick and remember just how great students are at art. Last year, entries spanned sculpture, jewellery, visual art, photography, multi-media, installation, poetry, prose and classical and popular music composition; the bar’s been set high, but we know student ingenuity is as bottomless as student stomachs.

4. Band Comp Final

This is your chance to see the next big thing before they get famous, hear them while they’re still close enough to touch and have a beer that doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg. You keep your arm and your leg. You need them for dancing. Entry is free and the bands are the cream of the crop. After a rigorous selection process, it’s now in the hands of our judges who walks away with their money and head held high, so clap hard and dance harder! Come find your next favourite band, song and guitar-playing crush.

5. Sunset Screenings

From Thursday 1st of September the Verge Tent is home to Sunset Screenings, an exclusive season of films curated by Film Studies superstar Dr Bruce Isaacs. From vampires to cowboys, from cowboys to post-apocalyptica, join Bruce as he goes through the most critically acclaimed films you’ve never seen. Learn about the classics, learn to love our free popcorn and grab a relaxing drink at the end of a long uni day.
